As of June 2010, there were over 292 million cell phones in use in the United States. The population of the United States is approximately 310 million (and a bunch of those are children). Imagine that! A whole bunch of these phones are iPhones or other smart phones.
Their use is so prevalent today, that you've likely heard that "there's an app for that!"
I'm the first to admit that I'm an iPhone junkie and am often looking for the newest and greatest app to help me in my life and my business. So last week, I was excited to learn from Barry Biggar, CEO of Visit Fairfax, that Fairfax County has its very own iPhone app!
The Visit Fairfax application helps you find nearby businesses, discover promotional offers and discounts and tells you about upcoming events at local destinations. While the Fairfax County app was specifically developed with tourism in mind, it's a great tool for locals as well. Whether you're visiting the area on business, already living here, or thinking about moving here, this iPhone app "gives you the goods" on Fairfax County!
There's several really cool functions. Since learning about the app, I've been using it, and you should too!
Near Me uses your iPhone's GPS to detect a your location and generates a Google Map displaying businesses and attractions in the vicinity. Here's a screenshot of the "Near Me" page:
The Offers section provides a list of special promotions and businesses offering you discounts. For example. you can be in Tysons Corner mall, pull up the app, find a discount and show your phone to the store to have the discount applied. No need to print a coupon! How cool is that?
Categories lets you search for local businesses and destinations by type such as "Dining," "Family Friendly" and "Nature & Outdoors."
There's an Events page to let you know about upcoming special events, fairs, exhibits, promotions, etc. going on through Fairfax County. Here's a recent screenshot:
So, what are some of the big attractions in Fairfax County?
- Mount Vernon -- home of George Washington and the MOST VISITED historical home in the United States.
- Udvar-Hazy Air & Space Museum -- only place in the world that you can see a space shuttle up close and personal.
- Tysons Corner -- a shopping mecca
- Wolf Trap Center for the Performing Arts -- the only national park devoted to the performing arts.
- Great Falls -- natural beauty
Did you know that Virginia ranks #8 in the number of dollars coming in from tourism? Up from #14 just 3 years ago! Maybe this app will play a part in increasing Virginia's ranking even more!
